ASEF Roadschool - Cultural Capacity Building
Since 1997, the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) has been active in capacity building for cultural professionals. Currently, ASEF also supports training in the areas of sustainable development, human rights and public diplomacy.
Rationale
The increasing importance of regular “upskilling†for employability and professional growth cannot be overstated in today’s rapidly changing workplaces. The skills base required to deliver increasingly demanding and international projects is growing. This is true both for arts managers in the non-profit arts sector and creative entrepreneurs in for-profit cultural and creative industries. However, a skills shortage exists. Formal training programmes are sometimes absent at the tertiary level and, more often than not, opportunities to upskill are extremely limited for those who have already entered the field.
Documented gaps exist in the following areas: knowledge and understanding of arts and heritage policies and trends; preparedness to work cross-border and cross-culturally; preparedness to transition into creative entrepreneurship; curatorial approaches and methods; ability to make good-quality grant applications; budgeting and financial reporting; project evaluation tools and methods; and, creative thinking and problem solving, among others.
Goals
- To facilitate regular “upskilling†opportunities for young cultural professionals such as arts managers, museum curators & arts journalists (SDGs 4.4 skills for employability; 5.5 women’s leadership)
